Final Fantasy 8 PS1
Final Fantasy 8
Today, I am going to talk about Final Fantasy 8. Personally, I like the game very much simply because of its complex battle system as compared to other games in the series. In fact, I think that the battle system of this game is even more complex than the one in Final Fantasy 7.
Playable characters in Final Fantasy 8
Final Fantasy 8 is a role playing video game released for PS1 in 1999. It was published by Square as well. The game was also released in the PC version. The story of the game is based on a group of well-trained SEEDs who seek to protect the world from a sorceress manipulating the war and time for her own purposes. Squall Leonhart is the main character of the game and he is 17 years old. He is a student at the military academy Balamb Garden, and is training to become a SEED. There are six main playable characters in the game, namely Squall Leonhart, a loner who focuses on his duty, Rinoa Heartilly, an outspoken woman who follows her heart in all situations, Quistis Trepe, an instructor with serious attitude, Zell Dincht, a martial artist with a passion for hot dogs, Slephie Tilmitt, a cheerful girl and Irvine Kinneas, a marksman.
Squall, the main character in Final Fantasy 8
The story is based on the SEED mission to take out the sorceress Edea, which turns out to be under control of another sorceress from the future called Ultimecia. Rinoa is possed by Ultimecia and with Ellone's help afterwards, she is sent back to the past (together with Ultimecia), enabling Squall's group to confront her in her time.
Squall's final weapon, lion heart
In the previous review on Final Fantasy 7, I once said that each character has different types of weapons and armors with different effects. It is exactly the same in Final Fantasy 8. A good example will be Squall, he learns new limit break whenever you manage to upgrade his weapon. Lion heart is the most powerful limit break which can be acquired when you manage to obtain all the necessary items to upgrade your weapon to its final version.
Junctionning GFs
However, as compared to Final Fantasy 7, summons, which are called Guardian Forces (GF) in Final Fantasy 8 are very crucial in order to maximize all the abilities of each character. In Final Fantasy 7, summons are in the form of materias and can only be equipped onto the empty slots of your weapons. They act simply as some mosters (summons) without much other effects. On the other hand, in Final Fanatasy 8, each GF equipped will in turn allow you to junction different types of magics on your characters. For example, for Ifrit and Bahamut, they will allow you to junction magic onto the strength ability whereas for shiva, it will allow you to junction onto spirit ability. Therefore, it is very important to junction the correct GF onto each character so that you can maximize all bis abilities. There are a lot of combinaisons possible and it is up to the player to choose the one that suits him the best. As a result, you can totally inverse all the abilities of the characters by giving them different GF combinaisons, which is not possible in Final Fantasy 7.
Leveling up
Another thing is that level is relatively useless in Final Fantasy 8. You don't need to farm for level, but instead you will need to farm for the most powerful magics to equip them onto your characters to boost up their abilities. Let's say, for example, Squall at level 30 with ultima equipped on strength can be more powerful than Squall at level 100 with scan equipped on strength. Besides, leveling up is also not a big problem in Final Fantasy 8, unlike Final Fnatasy 7. You need exactly the same amount of experience point to level up for each level. However, it is not the case in Final Fantasy 7 since you probably will need a lot more experience points to level up from 99 to 100 rather than from 20 to 21.
There are also chocobos in Final Fantasy 8. However, they don't really play a major role in the game. In Final Fantasy 8, you need to depend on the help of chocobo to obtain the most valuable materias in the game, whereas for Final Fantasy 8, you can still obtain all the necessary items without the help of chocobos.

Graphics of the game for sure is better than Final Fantasy 7, since the game was released 2 years after it. The story line is very good as well because there are love and friendships involved in the game. This game is so famous for the love story between Squall and Rinoa, especiall when Squall rescues Rinoa in the outerspace even though she is under the control of someone else that time. I especially like the scene where Squall hugs Rinoa inside the Ragnarok and when the song Eyes On Me by Faye Wong is played. Another scene that I like is when Squall finally kisses Rinoa under a fullmoon in the Balamb Garden at the end game.
Final Fantasy 8
All in all, Final Fantasy 8 is one of the best games in the final fantasy series, just like Final Fantasy 7. Personally, if I were given the choice to choose the best between these 2, I would go for Final Fantasy 8 for its more complex battle system and love story in the entire game. That is just merely my personal opinion. Click here if you wish to buy the game.
